Discover Oceana Grill

Walking into Oceana Grill feels like stepping straight into the heartbeat of New Orleans, where the air hums with conversation and the scent of butter, garlic, and seafood drifts from the kitchen. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long evening wandering the French Quarter, and it has become one of those dependable spots where you know exactly why you came. The location at 739 Conti St, New Orleans, LA 70130, United States puts it right in the middle of the action, yet the vibe inside still feels relaxed and welcoming rather than rushed.

The menu is the real star, sprawling in a way that only a classic Louisiana diner-style restaurant can pull off. On my last visit, I watched a couple from Texas debating between gumbo and jambalaya, only to order both after the server casually explained how the roux is cooked low and slow. That process matters. According to culinary research shared by the Louisiana Culinary Institute, the depth of flavor in gumbo comes from patiently browning the roux, not rushing it, and you can taste that attention here. Their seafood gumbo has a dark, rich base, loaded with shrimp and crab, and it’s the kind of bowl that makes you pause mid-conversation.

What stands out after several visits is consistency. I once spoke briefly with a line cook during a late-night stop, who mentioned that sauces are prepped in batches daily to maintain flavor balance. That method aligns with best practices recommended by food safety guidelines from the CDC, which emphasize freshness and proper temperature control, especially for seafood-heavy kitchens. It shows in the dishes, from blackened fish to crawfish étouffée, where textures and seasoning stay spot-on even during peak hours.

Oceana Grill also caters to variety, which explains why reviews often mention mixed groups finding something for everyone. I’ve seen families sharing platters, solo diners nursing bowls of soup, and late-night crowds digging into burgers and po’boys. The chargrilled oysters are a personal favorite, sizzling under a blanket of herbs and butter, and they pair well with a cold local beer. One server summed it up perfectly when he described the place as food that sticks to your ribs, and that phrase couldn’t be more accurate.

From an expertise standpoint, New Orleans is widely recognized by organizations like the James Beard Foundation as one of America’s most important food cities, and restaurants here are held to high expectations. Oceana Grill doesn’t try to reinvent Creole or Cajun cooking; instead, it focuses on execution. That confidence shows in simple things like properly cooked shrimp or rice that isn’t overdone, details that separate tourist traps from reliable kitchens.

Trust also comes from transparency. Nutritional information isn’t plastered everywhere, but staff are open about ingredients and preparation when asked, which is increasingly important as diners become more health-conscious. While it’s not a fine-dining temple, it doesn’t pretend to be. The limitation is clear: during busy nights, wait times can stretch, and the noise level climbs. Still, the staff usually manages expectations honestly, which goes a long way toward maintaining trust.

Reviews online often highlight generous portions and friendly service, and my experiences back that up. Portions are shareable, prices are reasonable for the location, and servers tend to offer suggestions based on what’s freshest that day. That kind of guidance feels personal rather than scripted, making each visit feel less like a transaction and more like being welcomed back into a familiar New Orleans rhythm.

  • Seriously impressed. The food was delicious, but the service was what really blew us away. Our waiter had an incredible memory, perfectly recalling our entire order despite all our questions and special requests—all without a notepad! This spot is a definite recommendation, and it's super convenient, just steps from Bourbon and Royal Street. Go!

  • A NOLA quarter classic! Must have the charbroiled oysters! Service was amazing- we had such a great night. Reasonable prices too with big portions. Really enjoyed the courtyard area! We will return again when we are NOLA.

  • We heard about Oceana Grill from locals who highly recommended it. We were not disappointed. Everything was GREAT right from the manager that greeted us, to our server Daniel Campos, and of course the food. I had started with the barbecue shrimp cheesecake (yes it is real), and a hurricane, of course. The main course was the Bayou Bliss which was out of this world! Try this place once and you will keep going back, just like we do. Thank you Oceana Grill and Daniel for great times!

  • We got to Oceana Grill right before the rush — good thing, because by the time we left there was a long line out the door. Service started off a little slow, but it was a busy weekend with an NFL home game, so no big deal. Once our drinks arrived, everything picked up. We were on a mission for boudin balls and this place delivered! The crab cakes were to die for, and the drinks and food were all really good. First time here, and definitely worth the visit.

  • This place was amazing. John the bartender was very welcoming and social. He made sure everyone at his bar was a conversation. The food was phenomenal. Had the blackened steak with rice and greens. Chefs kiss. And the bread pudding with the side of ice cream was heaven. The couple next to me ordered the craziest crab drink lol thank you for letting me take a picture!

  • First of all, the service at Oceana is excellent. From the host who seated us to our server, everyone was warm, welcoming, and attentive, enthusiastic, but still very professional. We ordered the Taste of NOLA, the Seafood Gumbo, and the Oceana Famous Oysters. All three dishes had fairly heavy seasoning. The gumbo, in particular, was on the salty side, though you can tell the flavors and spices were very well layered — if it were just a bit less salty, it would have been outstanding. The oysters were fresh off the grill, incredibly fragrant, and really delicious. Just make sure to eat them while they’re hot, because once they cool down, the flavor drops by about 60%. If you enjoy salty food or don’t mind dishes that are on the saltier side, this place is definitely worth visiting.

  • So good! We got a 10% coupon from the guy outside so we decided why not. Our server was awesome! She talked us into a drink they were promoting. I'm glad she did. We had crab cakes for an app. We ordered the trio and Shrimp pasta. Jambalaya was sooo good! Pasta has amazing flavor and did not disappoint. We devoured the crab cakes as well. It was fun, food was amazing, definitely recommend!

  • The food was absolutely fantastic, but Damon our waiter was even better. He recommended the special and it was absolutely delicious. All the waiters had to try it before it went on the menu so they could tell you how good it was, and he wasn’t lying! If you’re coming here for a birthday: ask to be sat at Damon’s table. He was so lovely and kind. The southern hospitality is unmatched and Damon is a perfect shining example of that
